A Heuristic Program for Assembly Line Balancing

By: F. M. Tonge An application of heuristic procedures to solve the assembly-line-balancing problem. Assembly-line balancing is defined as a process of assigning jobs to workers stationed along a continuous assembly line. The author attempts (1) to develop an acceptable, though not necessarily optimum, procedure for assembly-line balancing and (2) to discuss the use of computers for implementing heuristic decision procedures in the industrial management area. It is concluded that the combination of a heuristic approach and methods of computer use considered is advantageous in treating complex industrial management problems. RINGKASAN

Keseimbangan lintasan produksi merupakan suatu hal yang penting dalam suatu perusahaan. Keseimbangan lintasan tersebut diperlukan agar lintasan produksi dalam perusahaan tersebut memiliki pembebanan yang berimbang sehingga aliran produk dapat berjalan dengan lancar. Dalam penelitian ini obyek penelitiannya adalah suatu perusahaan pembuat brake drum terutama pada foundry plant. Sistem tersebut kemudian dimodelkan dan disimulasikan dengan bantuan software AweSim. Dari hasil simulasi didapatkan beberapa resource dengan utilisasi yang tinggi yang menunjukkan adanya bottleneck pada sistem. Hal ini mengakibatkan tidak lancarnya aliran entiti didalam sistem tersebut. Beberapa skenario penambahan resource/server kemudian diusulkan dan disimulasikan untuk memperbaiki kelancaran aliran tersebut. Dari hasil simulasi didapatkan peningkatan jumlah produk brake drum yang dihasilkan. Namun produk yang lain yaitu berupa mollen roll tidak mengalami peningkatan signifikan.
